As the people of the tiny little island nation of Samoa battle through a deadly and heartbreaking disease, people from across the globe have come together to provide resources, money and aid to those affected.
It is upsetting to think that someone would think to make fun of something like this. It isn't funny and the timing would never be right. The cartoon that the Otago Daily Times published this week was racist, insensitive and something that not only our country but the whole world should always condemn, Nothing could ever justify why this was made in the first place. As a proud Samoan and person who believes that everyone should be treated equally no matter where they come from, to the person who illustrated the cartoon and those who support it, as well people who hold such opinions I want you to know that we are people too. Those devastated by this epidemic are people, they have feelings and they are being forced to say goodbye to their babies - something that nobody should ever have to do. I don't often write about things like this, but I have decided that in order to make a difference I have to share my opinions and stand up in order to help create change. Samoans and Pacific Islanders know the many stereotypes, the little remarks and the quiet whispers. For years, a narrative has been created that puts us down. But this cartoon will not be a part of that story. Newspapers are for informing and inspiring the community and so they should continue to be. We can and should only stick together and I know that no matter what Samoa will fight on. My prayers and love go out to Samoa during this painful time. May you be guided with strength, may you feel love and may you be filled with comfort and peace. May you know that we are with you always.
